The Value of Expertise: A Lesson from Home Decorating

In December last year we moved into our new home.  We’ve recently had some work done to the house and the only thing left to do was to re-decorate.

I’ve decorated before, but I don’t enjoy it, I always find it more difficult than it should be and it takes me twice as long.  So this time around, rather than digging out the stuff from the garage, getting yet another roller/paint brush from the DIY store, covering the floors and furniture with old paint stained sheets, prepping the walls and decorating six rooms, hall stairs and landing, we decided to get the professionals in.  

My wife (who has a great eye for detail and design) created a schedule of which colours should go in which rooms, we left a key with the decorators and then went on holiday for 2 weeks.  

Perfect.

On driving back from the airport, conversation turned to the house. Had the decorators put the right colours on the right walls, had they tidied up after themselves, had they ruined any of the furniture or carpets?  It was early morning, and as we stood at the front door, I have to admit we were both extremely nervous.  Was our fantastic holiday about to be ruined…

However, as we opened the door and walked in.  We both let out a huge sigh of relief.  We had come back to a perfectly decorated home.  The decorators had done a wonderful job.  

It was expensive, and it would have been substantially cheaper had I decorated myself.  However, the money spent was worth every single penny.

It was a better job (than the one I would have done), I didn’t have any stress (apart from the nerves before we first entered), nor any of the frustrations (and mess) that normally go with me decorating.  And it saved me a huge amount of time.  (And most importantly I had a very happy wife – maybe that one should have gone first).
